Police Arrest 4 Fake EFCC Officials and 6 Others

The Kogi State Police Command on Thursday arrested four persons for allegedly attempting to defraud the Federal Polytechnic, Idah, posing as officials of the EFCC. The Acting Commissioner of Police in Kogi, Mr Austin Evbakhavbakun, made the announcement in Lokoja when he paraded the suspects before newsmen. The suspects are Samuel Ogbebor, Daniel Njaiji, Agwai Peter and Jackson Umosen. Evbakhavbakun said that the suspects had also claimed to be officials of the Federal Ministry of Education who were on inspection in the institution. He said that the ca
se was reported at the Idah Divisional Police Headquarters by the Rector of the Polytechnic
, Prof. Matthew Akpata, on Aug. 28. Evbakhavbakun said that Akpata had reported that the suspects came to his office, claiming to have come from Abuja to inspect on-going projects in the institution. The rector was said to have asked for an official introduction letter from the Federal Ministry of Education or their identity cards but Ogbebor, instead presented an EFCC identity card. The police chief said that Akpata became suspicious and invited the police who later arrested the suspects. He told newsmen that the police also recovered one Toyota Camry with registration number APP 630 BD, one fake EFCC identity card and a Zenith Bank ATM card, bearing Stanley Agbara from the suspects. The commissioner also paraded one Alhaji Musa Ifa and Sumaila Musa whom, he said, in the company of two others now at large, took away an unregistered new Toyota Camry from the residence of one Sadiku Makolo of Abocho. The suspects, he said, went to Makolo’s residence in the Dekina Local Government Area, claiming to be policemen attached to the CID, Benue State Police Command. The commissioner said that the suspects claimed that they were investigating the new car, which they said was stolen. He said that the suspects later forcefully collected the car documents from the unsuspecting Makolo and zoomed off. The police chief said that the vehicle was, however, traced to Mararaba in Nasarawa State, where the suspects were trying to dispose it. Also paraded were one Tanko Abubakar and Musa Maikasuwa who were arrested for allegedly leading a gang of eight armed robbers. Evbakhavbakun said that the gang had attacked and robbed a man and some market women who were on their way to Ikende Market in the Bassa Local Government of Area of Kogi. The police boss said that the matter was reported at the Oguma Police Station, adding that two locally-made pistols with three live cartridges were recovered from the suspects. He said that the suspects, including two others, arrested for other offences were undergoing interrogation and would be charged to court soon.
